The other day someone told me she’d never been on a holiday in her 45 years of life. When I asked why she said she had just never really wanted to. So I asked her this:
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
She replied, “Iceland”. She described the glaciers and how much she would love to see them in real life. So it turns out she did want to go on a holiday… I asked her why she’d never tried to make it happen and she told me there’s no point now because she’s too old. Hearing that made me so sad- she had just totally given up on her dreams.
I love asking people this question because it reveals the dreams they are suppressing (usually out of fear). People have said to me before that they couldn’t travel like I do- they just love Dundee so much. But when I ask them where they’d go if they could go anywhere, they tell me something like Australia or California. It shows that they are in denial- we all are. We’re all afraid. Fear is something that holds so many people back from achieving their dreams, particularly in regards to travel. Fear of ending up broke, fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of being alone or fear of judgment. I understand there are a lot of reasons people don’t travel but I think for the majority of those who want to, the ‘reasons’ are really just excuses.
Sacrifices can be made if you want it bad enough. Cut back on unnecessary expenses, travel alone… MAKE TIME. Nothing should get in the way of living the life you want to live. Tomorrow isn’t promised but we always act like we can live our dreams later. We put our goals aside to focus on doing ‘real life’ things like working ridiculously long hours at shit jobs to pay bills for a house that we’re never in. Before you know it life will be over. Do you really want to die knowing you didn’t take advantage of the chance to do all of the things YOU wanted to do? In case you didn’t know, one of the biggest regrets from dying people is that they didn’t live life for themselves and do what made THEM happy.
Yes, taking risks is hard. But there will always be an excuse and you will never be ready. To really achieve your goals and make life changes you have to learn to be uncomfortable- it’s what makes you grow as a person. And the more risks you take, the more your faith will grow.
So… if you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?
